Hip Replacement – Baseball Star’s Comeback
Hip replacement operations are a frequently carried out
procedure in the UK, with around 65,000 each year. A US baseball
star plans a successful comeback to the sport after undergoing hip
replacement surgery.
For those suffering from degenerative bone disease such as
osteonecrosis and osteoarthritis, a hip replacement procedure can
provide welcome relief from the pain associated with these
conditions. According to a report on The York Dispatch, an American
baseball player hopes to be the first to successfully return to the
sport after undergoing a hip replacement operation. Dave Veres, 41,
signed a deal with baseball team York Revolution in Pennsylvania
and hopes to resume his pitching career after a successful hip
replacement surgery.
Hip Replacement – A Sporting Chance
Whilst it is fairly uncommon for people of Dave Veres age to
require hip replacement surgery, it is not that unusual for
sportsmen who place a lot of stress on their joints to be more
susceptible to bone degradation and the needs for procedures such
as a hip replacement are heightened. According to the report in The
York Dispatch, Dave Veres hadn’t intended to return to the sport
after his hip replacement operation and had initially only
undergone the procedure in order to be able to walk free from pain
again. Speaking to The York Dispatch, Mr Veres stated, “The
technology has come so far, and going in I was scared to death. But
if someone sees I'm pitching on it now, obviously there's no
restriction on it. The every-day worker can do everything they want
to do. It's nice for the guys contemplating hip replacement
surgery.”
Hip Replacement – Proving a Point
After undergoing hip replacement surgery, the baseball team that
decided to take a chance on Dave Veres, The York Revolution, wanted
to give the veteran pitcher a trial run before offering him a
contract which, given his hip replacement procedure, is a stance
that Veres fully understands. Speaking to The York Dispatch, Mr
Veres stated, “It's understandable. I missed two years and I sat
out for awhile, so I have no problem having to prove it.” The
pitcher will certainly have some sympathy from his team coach,
however, as he also had hip replacement surgery and stated to The
York Dispatch, “With his condition, with the hip and everything, I
think it's awesome that he would even give it a shot. He looks in
great condition and great health. Hopefully he can start out really
well for us and get back to where he wants to go.”
