Hip Replacement – Are Magnets Key To Lifelong Hip?
Leading scientists in the UK are pioneering a study into
hip replacement procedures and believes a new fangled magnetic hip
could bring about a hip replacement operation whose results last a
lifetime.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, a number of leading hip
replacement specialists have devised a new type of hip replacement
using a specially designed magnetic hip that they believe will
negate the need for hip replacement revisions at a later date.
Generally speaking, hip replacement operations tend to last between
15 and 20 years but this new form of magnetic hip, it is hoped,
will last a lifetime.
Hip Replacement – Magic Magnets
Hip replacement procedures are utilised in a large number of
circumstances in the UK and they are very beneficial in alleviating
the pain associated with conditions such as osteonecrosis. However,
as things stand, a replacement hip will currently last between 15
and 20 years before it requires replacing or a hip replacement
revision. According to the report in the Daily Mail, however, a
leading hip replacement surgeon has come up with a magnetic hip
replacement which he believes could bring an end to the need for
hip replacement revisions. The new magnetic hip is currently
undergoing laboratory testing and it is hoped that these tests will
show that it is capable of lasting three times as long as current
hip replacement methods.
Hip Replacement – A Common Complaint
Hip replacement procedures in the UK are common and there are
currently about 65,000 such operations each year. It is hoped that
this new magnetic form of hip replacement can be utilised as,
generally speaking, those requiring hip replacement revisions are
often elderly and have more health concerns which can make surgery
less of an option but the new type of magnetic hip hopes to negate
the need for repeat operations. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Jane
Spence of Arthritis Care, states, “Hip replacement surgery can
bring dramatic improvement in mobility and quality of life. For
thousands of the nine million Britons with arthritis, it can mean a
return to work and an active social life, instead of isolation and
disability. Breakthroughs in the field are exciting, and Arthritis
Care welcomes any genuine advances in the search for ever more
practical and effective treatments.”
