Am I a candidate for LASIK?

Yes! If you:

  • Have realistic expectations
  • Have healthy eyes with no disease (ie cataracts, glaucoma, etc)
  • Are in good general health
  • Are within the range of correction
  • Are over 21 years old and have a stable prescription

Your eyes need to be examined thoroughly with computers to make sure the eyes are healthy before LASIK treatment is recommended.

What happens during the consultation?

The thorough evaluation of your eyes and medical condition will determine your suitability for the procedure.

For best results, you should stop wearing your contact lenses for at least two weeks before consultation. We test your vision with your glasses on and your degree of refractive error is measured using a machine called an auto refractor. We evaluate the curvature, power and shape of your cornea using a sophisticated computerised machine, the procedure known as corneal topography. This is done to make sure there are no hidden corneal conditions like keratoconus, which is a contra-indication for LASIK surgery. Also, the corneal thickness is measured using an ultrasound device called a pachometer.

Your eyes are also fully examined by the consultant to rule out cataract, glaucoma, or retinal problems.
