What happens during the procedure?
Before Your Procedure
After signing your consent form you will be given a sedative to
help you relax. Anaesthetic and antibiotic drops will be placed in
your eyes. We advise you wear something comfortable as there is no
need to change your clothes.
The LASIK Procedure
Prior to each procedure to your eyes, the laser is calibrated
and the microkeratome is sterilised, assembled and tested.
Topical anaesthetic drops are used to numb your eye and, after
the area around the eye is cleaned and prepared, an eyelid holder
is used to prevent you blinking. A microkeratome is then used to
create the flap which hinges just under the eyelid; the vision goes
dark at this stage.
The flap is then carefully lifted and the laser is used to
reshape the inner cornea according to your individual prescription.
When the treatment is completed, the flap will be replaced and
allowed to dry. The flap adheres without the need for stitches and
eye drops will be administered to prevent infection.
Glasses or protective shields will be used to prevent you
inadvertently rubbing your eyes. You will then sit in the waiting
area with your eyes closed.
