CAN WE FIND A CHEAPER PROVIDER OF LASER SURGERY?
Yes, you can….but beware…
Most of the big high street chains employ non-consultant staff
to perform laser surgery. Many also employ “flying doctors” from
overseas. Check if your surgeon
- has a permanent NHS consultant appointment and
- is on the Specialist (not general) register of the General
Medical Council.
In many cheaper centres, all the pre-operative assessment and
planning is performed by a non-medical technician. The patient is
seen by the operating surgeon only on the day of surgery. After
this all post-operative care is delegated to non-medical staff.
Almost all the famous high street chains do not have in-patient
facilities for the management of complications. Most problems with
refractive surgery arise due to poor patient selection (due to
limited involvement of a senior ophthalmologist in the
pre-operative assessment) or poor post-operative care (due to lack
of infrastructure) and not the surgical procedure itself.
Many centres will offer standard (not wave front guided)
