New treatment for age related
macular degeneration at Duchy Hospital
AMD (Age related Macular Degeneration) is the commonest cause of
blindness in people over the age of 55 in the UK. There are two
forms - Wet and Dry
What is Dry Macular Degeneration
Dry Macular Degeneration is where cells in the retina fail to
function properly. 90% of AMD sufferers have the Dry form of the
disease and traditionally, there has been no effective treatment
for Dry AMD. There is now a new treatment to improve vision for
some people with Dry AMD – IOL VIP
What is Wet Macular degeneration
About 10% of people with AMD develop the "wet" form of the
disease. This occurs when abnormal blood vessels develop underneath
the macula. These blood vessels leak fluid and blood, and
eventually promote scar tissue formation. Wet AMD can progress
rapidly and cause serious damage. If it's caught early, however,
laser surgery and injections may be able to prevent extensive
vision loss.
