Prostate Mapping Service at Springfield Hospital is shortlisted
Finalist for prestigious Independent Healthcare Awards – Best Use
of Technology
Consultant Urological Surgeon Mr. Henri Lewi and his Prostate
Mapping Team at Springfield hospital have been shortlisted as a
finalist by the Independent Healthcare Awards in the best
use of technology category.
This category was open to providers in all fields of independent
health and care delivery and nominees were asked to demonstrate how
technology was best used to enhance patient/service user care. This
award seeks to recognize the top technology that has made the
greatest impact during the past year.
Mr Henry Lewi and his team of Sarah Buttle – Urology nurse
specialist and Dr Nick Huddy – Consultant Anaesthetist, have been
auditing patients from January 2009 to March 2010 and have shown
that Prostate Mapping or Transperineal Template Guided Biopsy of
the Prostate (TGBP) is a far more sensitive approach to diagnosing
prostate disease.
In this particular technique the patient is given a general
anaesthetic and the prostate visualized using a fixed biplane
transrectal ultrasound probe. With a fixed Brachytherapy
stepper unit positioned over the patient’s perineum accurate
Transperineal prostatic biopsies are taken from twenty sectors of
the prostate (10 anterior sectors and 10 posterior).
Each sector of the prostate is biopsied at 5mm intervals so
building up an accurate map of the prostate by obtaining upward of
60 biopsies.
As the procedure is carried out via the Transperineal route,
septicaemia and rectal bleeding are avoided and urinary tract
infections (UTIs) are minimized. Mr Lewi is due to make his final
oral presentation to the panel of judges at the finals on the 6th
May in London and the winner will be announced on the 14th
September at a prestigious awards ceremony at The Hilton Park Lane
London.
