Digital Mammography comes to Springfield.

The X-ray department at Springfield hospital launched their new Digital Mammography service on the 18th May.

BBC Essex radio DJ Dave Monk will be cutting the ribbon to formally offer this service to the women of Chelmsford and Essex.  Head of Department Phil Thompson said: “We are delighted to have this brand new, state of the art equipment and to be one of the first units locally to offer this service.

The system allows the acquired images to be stored on a computer and to be manipulated to demonstrate subtle abnormalities that may previously have been more difficult to define” The breast unit can offer a wealth of clinical experience with three specialist breast surgeons, two specialist breast radiologists and dedicated mammographers and nurses.

Presently patients can be referred via their own GP, Springfield’s private GP service or by Consultant. It is anticipated that in the very near future we will be able to offer a direct referral process for women over the age of 40 years who are non-symptomatic.
