Discharge
Your Consultant will decide with you when you are fit for
discharge and inform the nursing staff accordingly. Your Consultant
will send a detailed letter to your referring clinician and GP
within a week of your discharge, explaining your operation and any
required aftercare.
You will also be given a 24 hour helpline number. This should be
your first contact if you have any problem at night or at weekends.
This advisory helpline is manned by experienced clinical staff. The
nursing staff will provide you with an information sheet detailing
‘dos and don’ts’ following your particular operation. You will also
be given a letter for your GP stating the length of your stay, the
operation, arrangements for any follow-up appointments that have
been organised and any discharge medication you have been
given.
Take-home Medication
This may be required on discharge. It may include pain-relieving
tablets, which you can take in accordance with the written
instructions on the packaging. It is essential in the initial
post-operative phase that you take these medications on a regular
basis and that you follow the written instructions on the
packaging.
Suture Removal/Dressing Service
If this is required, you will be given an appointment for suture
removal or dressings at the Treatment Centre. If you have any
problems after your discharge, please contact the Treatment
Centre.
