Lung cancer
Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in the UK, with
over 90 per cent of cases due to smoking*. Symptoms can include
coughing (especially with blood being coughed up), being short of
breath, and pain.
If lung cancer is suspected you will have a series of
tests, usually starting with Xrays and blood tests but also a
bronchoscopy (an examination where a tube is put down your airways
and a biopsy taken), and CT scans.
Some lung cancer cases are not suitable for surgery - although
in other cases doctors will recommend it. Other treatments - often
in combination - include chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a number of
new drugs which use natural substances within the body to fight the
cancer or affect how cells interact.
