Five Things to Know About Eye Bag Removal

Eye bags are areas of fatty tissue that become more prominent as we age. Eye bags can add years to your face and are caused by a variety of factors, including family history and lifestyle choices. Various attempts to treat eye bags at home can include eye massage, changing your sleeping position, and ensuring you are adequately hydrated. However, none of these options represent a long-term solution.

Eye bag removal surgery can be a great option to deal with those puffy eyes. If you are thinking about eye bag removal here are five things you should know.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is the technical term for surgical work on your eyelids in order to correct eye bags by removing or repositioning excess fat and skin. The procedure can also be used to elevate drooping eyelids and wrinkles around your eyes can also be reduced.

Eye bag removal surgery may be performed either under a local or general anaesthetic, depending on what is required and on the advice of your surgeon. The time taken under the knife can vary but is usually between one and three hours. Depending on the progression of your recovery, you should be able to return to work and normal functioning within two weeks.

Minimal Scarring

To reduce the risk of obvious scarring, any incisions are made within your eye’s natural skin creases and skin edges are joined together with very fine surgical stitching. It is sometimes possible to have incisions made on the inside of your eyelid, completely hiding even the smallest scars. Stitches are usually removed around five days after surgery and any scars that may be visible should eventually fade.

Potential side effects

It is likely that you will be able to go home very quickly after eye bag removal surgery. Any side effects should be of short duration. For example, it is likely that you will experience bruising and swelling but this will eventually subside over the following week or two. The application of cold compresses can help with this. Other potential short-term effects include symptoms such as blurred vision or watering eyes: again, these should be of short duration

Precautions after eye bag removal surgery

Your surgeon may advise you that you should avoid applying make up for the first seven days after eye bag removal and avoid using contact lenses for around two to three weeks. Low impact exercise during recovery is generally a good idea, but high impact sports should be avoided for at least the first month.

Long term benefits

It is unlikely that you will need to have further surgery in order to produce a pleasing result. The freshening of your face from eye bag removal surgery can last up to ten years. The blepharoplasty will not stop natural aging, but your face will appear younger than if you never had the procedure at all. Maintaining a healthy diet with regular exercise, stopping smoking and reducing your alcohol intake should help augment the results of your eye bag removal surgery and ensure that you continue to enjoy the benefits for as long as possible.
