What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy safely and effectively treats varicose and spider veins.

A solution, called a sclerosant, is injected directly into your vein. The solution irritates the lining of your vein so that it expands, sticks together and forms a scar that closes off your vein. Your blood is then forced to reroute to healthier veins. The vein collapses, is reabsorbed into local tissue, and fades within a few weeks.

How long does sclerotherapy last?

Sclerotherapy is permanent and so the results should last your lifetime. This is because the vein turns to scar tissue and is reabsorbed by your body.

However, sclerotherapy will not prevent more varicose or spider veins from forming. Your lifestyle and genetics will largely determine if you will develop further varicose or spider veins in the future.

How many sessions of sclerotherapy are needed?

You may require several sclerotherapy treatments. It varies from patient to patient and depends on the size or number of areas that need treating.

Typically, two to four treatments are required for the best results. In patients with just a few veins, one to two sessions will suffice. More treatments are required where veins are more numerous and extensive¹. Treatment sessions last 30 to 60 minutes.

What are the costs of sclerotherapy?

The costs of sclerotherapy vary from patient to patient. They will depend on the number and extent of veins that need treating, the number of sessions required, and your Ramsay hospital of choice.

You will receive a formal quotation price for your sclerotherapy after your consultation with one of our experienced vascular surgeons. This formal quote will be valid for 60 days.

The costs of your sclerotherapy may be covered by medical insurance. Health insurance typically does not cover sclerotherapy for varicose or spider veins if it is for cosmetic reasons. However, if sclerotherapy is recommended for medical reasons such as they are causing you pain and discomfort, it may be covered by your insurance. We advise you get written confirmation from your insurance provider before your sclerotherapy commences.

What is the recovery process after sclerotherapy?

Recovery is individual to each patient and may depend on how many veins are treated and their size.

Sclerotherapy treatment is an outpatient procedure so you can usually resume most normal activities shortly after each session. You will be advised to walk around soon after your procedure.
