Meet Mr Ian Reilly: Consultant Podiatric Surgeon, Educator and Author

Mr Ian Reilly is a Consultant Podiatric Surgeon at Ramsay Health Care’s Woodland Hospital and Glendon Wood Hospital. Alongside a broad foot and ankle surgical practice, he has a longstanding involvement in postgraduate education, clinical training and professional writing. His particular interests include bunion and forefoot surgery, complex nail surgery and injection therapy.

Clinical and Academic Experience

Mr Reilly has lectured internationally and taught extensively across universities and professional organisations, including roles as a Senior Lecturer and External Examiner for podiatry programmes. His teaching combines clinical experience with a strong emphasis on evidence-based practice, clinical reasoning and safe surgical decision-making.

He is particularly involved in postgraduate education in complex nail surgery and injection therapy for podiatrists. He is also a co-author of Foot and Ankle Injection Techniques: A Practical Guide, written as a practical resource for clinicians developing their knowledge and skills in foot and ankle injection therapy.

Complex Nail Surgery

Mr Reilly has a particular clinical and teaching interest in complex and revision nail surgery. Patients referred with severe, recurrent or previously unsuccessful ingrown toenail surgery may have pathology involving both the nail plate and the surrounding soft tissues. His approach therefore considers the complete clinical presentation rather than the nail in isolation, with treatment tailored to the individual patient.

At Glendon Wood Hospital, a significant proportion of this work is undertaken for NHS patients. Mr Reilly regards the improvement in comfort, mobility and quality of life that can follow successful treatment of longstanding nail pathology as one of the particularly rewarding aspects of his practice.

Advanced Injection Therapy

Mr Reilly has extensive experience in foot and ankle injection therapy and provides postgraduate training for podiatrists and other clinicians working in musculoskeletal practice. His teaching covers the scientific basis, clinical indications, patient selection, technique and safe use of injection therapies for conditions including osteoarthritis, nerve entrapment and plantar heel pain. His educational approach draws on published evidence, his own academic work and decades of clinical experience, with an emphasis on understanding why and when an intervention is appropriate rather than simply learning a technical procedure.

Foot and Ankle Surgery

At Woodlands and Glendon Wood Hospitals, Mr Reilly provides a broad range of podiatric surgical procedures. Bunion and forefoot surgery form a major part of his operative practice. Procedure selection is individualised according to the nature and severity of the deformity, symptoms, functional requirements and the patient’s goals. His practice includes procedures such as scarf osteotomy and Lapidus or first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis where clinically indicated. His wider surgical practice includes managing hammer toes, painful corns and keratotic lesions, heel pain, benign soft-tissue lesions, nerve entrapments, tendon disorders, and a range of other forefoot and rearfoot conditions. He has performed more than 14,000 surgical procedures during his career.

Specialist and Reconstructive Procedures

Mr Reilly also undertakes selected reconstructive and cosmetic foot procedures where there is an appropriate clinical or functional indication. These include surgery for syndactyly (webbed toes) and foot procedures for transgender women who wish to fit female footwear more comfortably, supporting both physical comfort and gender affirmation. He approaches this area of practice with particular attention to realistic expectations, informed consent and the individual needs of each patient.

A Commitment to Surgery, Education and Evidence-Based Practice

Mr Reilly’s practice brings together extensive surgical experience, postgraduate education and academic work. Whether treating patients or training clinicians, his approach is centred on careful assessment, appropriate procedure selection, evidence-based decision-making and achieving meaningful improvements in pain, function and quality of life.
