  • I was referred to the Oaks Hospital by the Pain Clinic at Ipswich Hospital. I've recently had an updated MRI (very quick and easy to arrange) and following that, discussed the options with the consultant and came up with a treatment plan. I've now had some Nerve Root Block injections and depending on the result of these and what pain relief I get from them, we are going to look at a Spinal Cord Stimulator as a longer term option for pain relief. The consultant here is also the only person other than me who has noticed both how high my current prescriptions are and how long I've been on them. I was only meant to be on this (or probably a lower) level of Morphine and Gabapentin for a few months around my previous spinal surgery nearly two years ago. As the usual questions when querying a repeat prescription are just "Any change in your symptoms?" and "Any side-effects?" to which both answers were no, my GP has just been re-issuing repeat prescriptions for these, without querying it, without warning me about long-term side-effects (which wasn't done at the start as they were only meant to be this high for a short-term), and with no effort to reduce the dosage. However, the consultant at the Oaks has written to my doctor telling them to look at my medication and see about very slowly reducing it whilst the Nerve Root Block takes effect. Everyone I've dealt with so far at the Oaks has been amazing from the Receptionists through to the Consultant, definitely not forgetting the fantastic Nurses. They've all been happy to help, to treat me like a person and not just another case of "bad-back", and are an absolute credit to the Oaks Hospital. I'd definitely recommend going there for any procedures if you can, as my experience so far has been brilliant.

  • Overall a very positive experience. The only negative was a prolonged wait in reception on the day of my admission. This I believe was due to the lack of communication between the reception area and the ward.
