Berkshire Independent Hospital has strengthened its long‑standing relationship with St Mary’s and All Saints Church of England Primary School, located just across the road. What began as a neighbourly connection has grown into a meaningful partnership rooted in opportunity, learning and community support.
A School Moving Forward
St Mary’s and All Saints was recognised by Ofsted as having an Outstanding rating for personal development and Good ratings in all other categories. This milestone reflects the dedication of its staff, pupils and wider community. Berkshire Independent Hospital is proud to champion the school’s progress and contribute to initiatives that enrich pupils’ learning and development.
Creating Opportunities Beyond the Classroom
One of the most significant contributions has been the hospital’s fundraising efforts to support pupil places on an annual skills‑building trip to Finland. This immersive experience gives children the chance to develop resilience, teamwork, confidence and independence through outdoor learning, cultural exchange and problem‑solving activities.
This year’s Finland programme includes:
· Forest‑based team challenges that build communication and leadership
· Outdoor survival and navigation skills designed to strengthen confidence
· Cross‑cultural learning with Finnish pupils and educators
· Activities focused on wellbeing, self‑belief and personal growth
Teachers have shared that pupils return from Finland with noticeably increased confidence and a willingness to try new things. Bradley said the trip helped him “try new things and have more confidence”, while Poppy shared that it encouraged her to “try to be more thoughtful and helpful”. These reflections highlight the powerful personal growth that the experience can inspire. Staff also report improvements in teamwork, independence and pride in representing their school and community. These experiences help shape pupils’ futures and may one day support them as future local professionals.
Last year, fundraising from Berkshire Independent Hospital enabled three pupils to attend the trip. This year, the hospital is aiming to support four places. Staff have been raising funds through raffles, cake sales, staff‑led events and the Senior Leadership Team’s upcoming 1000 step challenge at Ramsay HQ in London. So far, enough has been raised to fund one pupil place, with more activities planned.
Honouring Jean’s Legacy
This partnership also carries a deeply personal story. Jean, a much‑loved member of the theatre team, was known for her commitment to supporting the school. After her unexpected passing, colleagues found a purse in her locker containing money she had collected for the pupils.
At her family’s request, donations were made to the school in her memory instead of flowers. St Mary’s and All Saints later presented Jean’s husband with a special shirt of thanks. This gesture touched the entire hospital team and strengthened the bond between the two communities.
Learning Together
The hospital’s Staff Engagement Committee regularly visits the school to support learning linked to health and wellbeing. These sessions have included topics such as people who help us and basic bandaging skills. They help children understand the world of healthcare and build confidence in interacting with professionals.
Shared Values, Shared Community
Supporting St Mary’s and All Saints reflects Berkshire Independent Hospital’s core values. The hospital is committed to community, compassion and opportunity. The children are part of the hospital’s neighbourhood, and some may one day become colleagues, volunteers or healthcare professionals.
The Headteacher, Matt Parting, has expressed sincere thanks for the hospital’s ongoing support, and the partnership continues to deepen each year.
