After struggling with disrupted sleep and urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, Graham Elson found a treatment option that has made a significant difference to his quality of life. His experience also marks an important milestone for Pinehill Hospital, where he became the 150th patient to undergo Aquablation therapy.
For Graham, getting a good night’s sleep had become increasingly difficult. Frequent trips to the toilet during the night, alongside difficulty passing urine, were affecting his sleep quality and everyday life.
Like many men experiencing symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate, Graham was looking for a treatment option that could help him get back to feeling more like himself.
In June 2026, he underwent Aquablation therapy at Pinehill Hospital, under the care of Professor Vasdev.
Finding the right treatment for an enlarged prostate
Graham, who works full-time as a management consultant, first became aware of Aquablation through a family connection. His sister’s partner had previously undergone the procedure with Professor Vasdev, giving Graham a personal insight into the treatment.
One of the key factors influencing his decision was the potential to preserve his sex life, which was an important consideration when weighing up treatment options.
Aquablation is a minimally invasive surgical treatment for benign prostatic enlargement (BPE), a non-cancerous condition that can cause troublesome urinary symptoms. It uses a robotically controlled waterjet to remove excess prostate tissue.
A significant improvement in sleep quality
Since undergoing Aquablation therapy, Graham has noticed a considerable improvement in his quality of life, particularly when it comes to sleep.
Reflecting on the difference treatment has made, he said:
“My sleep quality in particular is significantly improved.”
Graham described his experience of care in hospital as good and spoke highly of Professor Vasdev, praising his knowledge, passion and care throughout his treatment journey.
He said: “Professor Vasdev is the consummate professional – extremely knowledgeable, passionate, caring and at the top of his game.”
Graham’s advice to other men
For men experiencing similar symptoms, Graham’s message is not to put off exploring their treatment options.
“If you need the procedure, don’t prevaricate – the immediate recovery period (the first two weeks especially) can be challenging, but the longer-term benefits are worth it.”
His experience highlights the importance of recognising symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate and seeking advice from a healthcare professional about the options available.
Supporting men’s health this Movember
Movember provides an opportunity to encourage more open conversations about men’s health and remind men that they do not have to simply put up with symptoms that affect their sleep, comfort and quality of life.
For men experiencing urinary symptoms, speaking to a GP or specialist can be an important first step towards understanding the cause and exploring appropriate treatment options.
Protect your prostate this Movember
Professor Nikhil Vasdev, Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon at Pinehill Hospital, shares some advice around how to prevent an enlarged prostate.
“Prostate enlargement is often a natural aging process and cannot be completely prevented. However, several lifestyle changes may help reduce the severity of BPH symptoms, including regular check-ups to determine any prostate issues early, physical activity, healthy diet, reducing or avoiding alcohol/caffeine.”
