Stefanie Maggs Theatre Healthcare Assistant HCA Nurse Apprentice

We take pride in the development of our staff at the Boston West Hospital - one example of this is that of Stefanie Maggs.

Stefanie is currently undertaking the Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship, alongside working as a Theatre HCA. Stefanie started her apprenticeship in November 2020 and with hard work and dedication, she will qualify as a Registered Nurse in November 2023.

As part of her training, Stefanie attends Buckinghamshire New University in Uxbridge and resides there for 1 to 2 weeks at a time, attending lectures and a utilising a Simulation Suite for practical lessons.

Speaking about her training, Stef has said “as a mother of adult daughters and now two grandchildren, it made sense for me to achieve my dream via this route, as it means I can still work in a place I love, have a guaranteed job when I qualify, and haven't accumulated any student debt at my age to get there. It's a safe way of stepping out of my comfort zone and going for it. I have been extremely lucky with the types of experiences I have been exposed to and have planned. Patients recognise that my uniform is very different from the other student nurses on the wards, and they love to hear about my apprenticeship journey with Boston West Hospital and Ramsay Healthcare.”

As part of her studies, Stefanie must complete rotational placements across other local NHS facilities, including Pilgrim Hospital, which is part of the United Lincolnshire Healthcare Trust. These placements last approximately 6-8 weeks at a time, and cover a wide variety of specialities. Stefanie has already completed placements in:

- Trauma Orthopaedics

- Stroke Unit

- Endocrinology & planned investigation unit

Stefanie is currently on a community placement at Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust at the Urgent Treatment Centre, and then she will go to the Acute Cardiac Unit to complete her year 2 placements. In year 3, her placements will be in Intensive Therapy Units, at Fitzwilliam Hospital in Peterborough, and in the Accident & Emergency department at Pilgrim Hospital.

Stefanie is being given support and guidance from senior members of staff at Boston West Hospital, along with protected time to ensure that she can complete her placements and coursework to gain her qualification. The ethos at the Boston West Hospital is to empower and nurture our fantastic staff to achieve the goals they have in their professional life. Stefanie will make a fantastic nurse and everyone at Boston West Hospital wishes her well for her ongoing studies!
