Your wound is left open and dressings applied. This surgery has the lowest risk of your sinus coming back. The downside is that your wound may take a long time to heal and your dressings will need to be changed daily for two to three months.
• Excision and wound closure – surgery is performed under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon surgically removes your affected sinus with the surrounding skin and then closes the wound using a flap of your own skin and seals it with stitches Closing the wound helps it to heal quicker but it has a higher chance of reinfection compared to wide excision.

The recovery process will depend on the type of pilonidal sinus surgery you have.

• Incision and drainage - recovery time is 4 to 6 weeks
• Wide excision and open healing - recovery time is 6 to 12 weeks. Your wound dressing will need to be changed each day.
• Excision and wound closure - quicker recovery time than wide excision and open healing
• Endoscopic ablation for a pilonidal sinus – recovery will be about a month to completely heal, but this may be quicker.
