Mr. Simon Boyle, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Clifton Park Hospital specialising in shoulder and elbow procedures, has successfully completed the formidable Marathon des Sables, often referred to as the "Marathon of the Sands." Now in its 39th year, this legendary ultramarathon spans approximately 257 km (160 miles) across the Sahara Desert in southern Morocco and is widely regarded as one of the most gruelling endurance challenges in the world.
The race took place over six stages across seven days in April 2025, testing competitors with extreme temperatures, harsh terrain, and the need for complete self-sufficiency. One of the toughest stages involved a gruelling 52-mile stretch on foot through the desert.
Simon, who began the challenge on Sunday, 6th April, pushed through the intense physical and mental demands to cross the finish line, joining a select group of athletes who have conquered what is considered the toughest foot race in the world.
Beyond the personal achievement, Simon used the opportunity to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Through generous donations, he raised over £2,800 to support the charity’s vital work. “I’m fortunate not to have been directly affected by cancer, but I recognise the invaluable work that charities like Cancer Research UK do to support those living with the disease and their families. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported my fundraising efforts so far.”
Balancing a demanding surgical career with training was no small feat. “Most of my training had to be done in the early mornings or late at night with a head torch,” Simon explained. “I even completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge to simulate the endurance aspect and took long hot baths daily to try and acclimate to desert heat. But nothing could truly prepare me for the Sahara - it was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.”
Clifton Park Hospital, part of Ramsay Health Care UK, was proud to sponsor Simon in his remarkable endeavour. Established in 2006 and located just outside of York city centre, the hospital is known for providing high-quality healthcare to NHS patients through the e-Referral system, as well as to those with private medical insurance or who are self-funding their treatment.
“Mr. Boyle’s dedication, resilience, and drive are truly inspiring,” said a Clifton Park Hospital spokesperson. “We are incredibly proud of his achievement and were honoured to support him as he took on this world-class challenge.”
