During your stay

Transport and parking

Most day patients will spend approximately four hours post operatively with us (if local anaesthetic is used it may be less). Please ensure that a responsible adult is available to collect you.

Disabled access

The hospital entrances and exits have been designed to enable easy access for wheelchairs. If you require the use of a wheelchair during your stay, either for yourself or visitors, please let the receptionist know either beforehand or on arrival.

Admission

Please arrive at the time specified and go to the area as stated in our correspondence with you. You will be asked to wait in a ‘Pre surgery lounge’ where you will meet other patients having a procedure in our day unit. Alternatively for those hospitals without a specific day unit you will be shown to your room.

A nurse will welcome you and do some pre treatment checks (such as blood pressure and pulse). You will also be asked some questions to ensure that we have all the information needed to ensure your safety and that all your needs are taken into account.

You may also be seen by your Surgeon and/or Anaesthetist - in a private room. Please take the opportunity to ask any of the team any questions you may have. Once all the checks have been completed you will be asked to return to the ‘Pre surgery area’. You will only be asked to change out of your clothes and into a ‘theatre gown’ if necessary. If this is required, you will be provided with a secure locker in which to place your belongings. When everything is ready, you will be escorted to the area where your treatment will take place, and met by your doctor and his team. It will depend on the type of anaesthetic you are receiving, as to where your treatment will take place. For example, if having a general anaesthetic or sedation, this may be an operating theatre. If having a local anaesthetic this may be a treatment room.
