Tees Valley Hospital, part of Ramsay Health Care UK has announced the launch of its new Mako SmartRobotics™ with the Mako 4 system, bringing one of the most advanced joint replacement technologies available to patients across Teesside and the North East of England.
The hospital is now offering hip, knee and partial knee replacement procedures using the innovative technology which is designed to help orthopaedic surgeons plan and perform surgery with a high level of precision and accuracy.

Sandra Donoghue, Hospital Director at Tees Valley Hospital, said:
“We’re incredibly proud to launch our new private orthopaedic service using the Mako 4 system here at Tees Valley Hospital. The results from our first day were extremely encouraging, with three out of four patients able to return home on the same day of their procedure.
This reflects our commitment to combining advanced technology with outstanding clinical care, helping patients recover more quickly and get back to living happier, healthier lives.”
The Mako 4 system creates a personalised surgical plan based on a patient’s anatomy, supporting surgeons throughout the procedure with real-time data and enhanced precision. The technology is designed to improve implant positioning and can help support faster recovery, reduced pain and improved joint function.
Orthopaedic surgeon Mr James Webb, who has performed more than 1,000 Mako-assisted procedures, described the technology as a “real game changer” for patients in the region.
Mr Webb said:
“Mako SmartRobotics™ has been a great addition to Tees Valley Hospital. It is very exciting that we have the only Mako 4 system in the North East of England. This is a real game changer for patients in the Teesside region and the wider North East.
In my experience of over 1,000 Mako procedures, I have found that the robotic technology can lead to quicker recovery, less pain afterwards and a more natural feeling joint in both hip and knee replacement surgery.
I’m excited that we can now offer this technology at Tees Valley Hospital and look forward to many more Mako procedures in the future.”

The hospital has already received highly positive feedback from its first Mako patients.
Stuart Pudney, one of the first patients to undergo robotic-assisted surgery at the hospital, said:
“The service was first class from admission to discharge on the same day. It was amazing that I could actually walk a few steps within just three hours of the operation.
Any concerns I had about the use of robotics were easily addressed by the medical staff, leaving me totally confident in the process.”
Gary Tindle, the hospital’s first robotic-assisted hip replacement patient, added:
“From start to finish, my experience was exceptional. The use of the latest robotic technology, combined with Mr Webb’s expertise, has made a significant difference to my recovery and overall comfort.
I would not hesitate to recommend Tees Valley Hospital to anyone considering hip replacement surgery.”
The launch of Mako marks a significant milestone for the hospital and forms part of Tees Valley Hospital’s ongoing investment in innovative healthcare technology and patient-centred care, helping patients access advanced orthopaedic treatment closer to home.
