Springfield Hospital, part of Ramsay Health Care UK, is pleased to announce that 65 men suffering from Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) have been treated using Aquablation Therapy, a cutting-edge robotic prostate treatment.
As men age, their prostate tends to increase in size. This can put pressure on the urethra and affect urine flow. This enlargement of the prostate is termed as BPH. This occurs when noncancerous cells of the prostate divide to make more cells. Prostate enlargement is often a natural ageing process and cannot be completely prevented. While BPH is not associated with the development of cancer, the two often go together. Distinguishing between them is an important part of the diagnosis process. BPH can also cause sexual issues, and medications normally prescribed to treat BPH have side effects of erectile and ejaculatory dysfunction.
Aquablation therapy is an advanced, minimally invasive treatment for BPH that uses imaging, robotics, and a heat-free waterjet to provide long-lasting relief with low rates of complications. Clinical studies have shown that Aquablation Therapy offers significant symptom relief and low rates of irreversible complications, across prostates of all sizes and shapes. It offers several benefits including improved urine flow and in comparison, to other treatments, there is an increased likelihood patients will preserve sexual function and continence1. The treatment has been available for patients at Springfield Hospital since October 2025.
An Aquablation patient at Springfield Hospital said:
“I found it frustrating having to constantly look for public toilets whilst out and about, as the frequency of needing to urinate was always on my mind. Having to get up every night to use the toilet was also affecting my sleep. Now, I don’t get up every night to go to the bathroom. My advice to people thinking about Aquablation would be to go for it, it can improve your standard of life.”
My consultant was friendly, informative and put my mind at rest about having the procedure. Springfield Hospital is well kept; my appointments were on time and every member of staff I encountered was friendly and professional. I also found the food service was of good standard.”
Mr Ranjan Thilagarajah, Consultant Urologist, commented:
“I’m really proud that we treated 65 men with Aquablation therapy at Springfield Hospital and played a part in improving our patients’ quality of life. This state-of-the-art technology uses the precision of robotic assistance and the power of water to remove prostate tissue safely and effectively. No two patients are the same, and this technology allows me to individualise treatment by adapting the procedure to different prostate sizes and shapes.”
Nick Jackson, Hospital Director at Springfield Hospital added: “We’re really proud to mark this milestone and pleased to have supported so many patients, playing a role in improving their quality of life. At Springfield Hospital, we are at the forefront of technology and cutting‑edge treatments, with every breakthrough dedicated to enhancing the health and wellbeing of our community.”
