A flow rate test measures the rate and volume of urine you pass, alongside bladder scans before and after urinating, to assess changes in your urinary flow.
A flow rate test is a test that records the rate and volume of urine that you pass. It is carried out to assess the changes you have experienced in your usual flow of urine. You will be asked to pass urine into a machine in a private designated room. The results will be recorded and printed outside the room. You will also have a scan of your bladder before and after you have finished urinating.
Preparing for a flow test is simple, but here are some tips to make the experience smoother and stress-free:
Stay hydrated - make sure your bladder is comfortably full before the test. If that’s tricky while traveling, you can arrive early at the clinic and drink fluids there to fill your bladder. Please be aware that it may take up to 2 hours for your bladder to fill up.
Dress comfortably - wear loose clothing to make it easier for the healthcare team to perform any required bladder scans.
Carry essentials - bring a book, music, or something to keep you entertained in case you need to wait for your bladder to fill up.
Special tips:
If you have difficulty holding a full bladder or need help during the process, let the clinic know in advance so they can assist you.
Don't worry about skipping meals - you can eat and drink as usual before the test.
Once the flow rate test is complete, you can resume your normal daily activities immediately, as the procedure is non-invasive and requires no recovery time.
