What is benign scrotal lump surgery?

Benign scrotal lump surgery is an operation performed to remove a fluid build-up in your scrotum that is causing a lump or swelling in this area and is often painful.

The main benign scrotal lumps that can occur include:

  • Hydrocele - fluid collects in the sac around your testicles due to an injury or infection of your scrotum.
  • Epididymal cyst - fluid collects in your epididymis, a tube-like structure that stores and transports sperm, usually located alongside your testicle.

Surgery will vary depending in the type of benign scrotal lump being treated.

What are the benefits of benign scrotal lump surgery?

The benefit of benign scrotal lump surgery is the removal of the lump. If the lump is large, its removal will relieve any discomfort and make walking easier.

If you want to become a father in the future it is recommended that you leave an epididymal cyst alone as surgery in this area can cause scarring that may reduce your fertility.

What is involved in a benign scrotal lump procedure?

A benign scrotal lump procedure is performed under general or spinal anaesthetic and takes around 20 to 50 minutes.

Your urologist will make a small cut on your scrotum. The procedure will then depend on whether you have a hydrocele or epididymal cyst.

  • Hydrocele - your surgeon will drain the fluid from around your testicle, then “stitch up” the sac which holds the fluid using absorbable stitches to prevent the fluid from re-forming. Sometimes the sac will be removed completely, especially if it has a very thick wall.
  • Epididymal cyst – your surgeon will separate the cyst from your epididymis and testicle. This cyst removal will interrupt the passage of sperm from your testicle which may be irreversible. They will remove part or all of your epididymis.

Once the procedure is complete your surgeon will close your skin using dissolvable stitches.

What is the recovery process of scrotal lump surgery?

You may be given a scrotal support following your scrotal lump surgery.

You can expect to go home the same day or the following day, but ensure that you follow your surgeon’s post-operative advice.

You may feel some discomfort and this can usually be managed with simple painkillers.

You will be able to return to work after two to four weeks, depending on your recovery and job type.

It is advisable for you to avoid heavy lifting or any other strenuous exercise for at least four weeks.
