My Journey Back to Running After Knee Replacement Surgery

I underwent a total knee replacement, and at the time, I honestly didn’t know what the future would look like. Before surgery, I faced significant uncertainty about my ability to run again, which is my passion.

After more than 24 years of service in the army, I was medically discharged following my surgery. That transition alone was incredibly difficult, but what affected me most was the fear that I might never run again. Running had always been a huge part of my life—not just physically, but mentally too. Losing that left me feeling overwhelmed, and I went through a period of deep depression as I struggled to adjust.

Having my surgery at Fitzwilliam Hospital was a turning point

From the very beginning, I was supported by an incredible team whose compassion, professionalism and encouragement made all the difference to my recovery.

With their guidance, I slowly began to rebuild my strength and confidence. What I didn’t expect was just how far that recovery would take me.

After just under six weeks of training, I completed the London Landmarks Half Marathon

Crossing that finish line was one of the most emotional and rewarding moments of my life. It wasn’t just about running again—it was about proving to myself that I could overcome what had once felt impossible.

Even more importantly, I was able to raise money for the Royal British Legion, a cause that means a great deal to me.

Looking back, I feel incredibly grateful.

The care I received didn’t just help me recover physically—it helped me find myself again

For anyone who may be worried about having a similar procedure, I would say this: you are in very good hands. The support you receive truly makes all the difference.
