What is the difference between private healthcare and NHS care?

Choosing private healthcare means you can pick your own consultant, book appointments at a time that suits you, and typically be seen within days rather than months. You'll also have a private, comfortable environment throughout your treatment, with your chosen consultant leading your care from first appointment to full recovery.

What is a private hospital?

A private hospital is a hospital funded independently of the NHS, where patients pay for their own treatment, either directly or through private medical insurance. At Ramsay Health Care, this means faster access to consultants, flexible appointment times, and transparent, fixed pricing – all built around you. 

How much does private healthcare cost in the UK?

Costs vary depending on your consultant, treatment, and hospital. At Ramsay Health Care, we offer fixed-price TotalCare™ packages agreed upfront, and 0% payment plans, so you always know what you're paying before you start.

Do I need a GP referral to see a private consultant?

Not always. Many patients can self-refer directly to a private consultant at Ramsay Health Care without seeing their GP first, though a referral is required for some treatments. If you're not sure, our team can guide you through the quickest route to being seen.

What happens if my treatment ends up costing more than expected?

With our TotalCare™ packages, your price is agreed and fixed before treatment begins, so there are no unexpected costs. If your treatment plan changes for clinical reasons, your consultant will always discuss this and any cost implications with you first.

Can I change my consultant or appointment if my circumstances change?

Yes. We know plans change, so you can request a different appointment time or, if needed, discuss switching consultants with our patient services team. Your care stays flexible, for as long as it needs to.
