Academic Background

Mr Bhat is extensively trained both in the UK and Overseas. After qualifying in India, he did his initial post-graduate training in Trauma and Orthopaedics (MS) from Bombay University, where he submitted his thesis on fractured wrists. His interest in hand and wrist surgery became clear and the desire to become a leading expert by training in the UK. He taught undergraduates in India for a period before he was deployed to the UK under the Overseas Doctors Training Scheme to refine his skills in Hand and Wrist surgery. He was trained in Northern Ireland, Nottingham and Portsmouth shaping him into a highly competent and respected upper limb specialist. He did his hand surgery fellowship from Nottingham and Shoulder surgery training in Portsmouth. He has, in collaboration with his early mentor, published several important papers, which have successfully help shape hand surgery around the world. Mr Bhat undertook research into the management of wrist injuries including distal radial fractures, scaphoid fractures and perilunate injuries. He also carried out research on frozen shoulder and surgery for arthritis of the hand and thumb. His current research interests are carpal tunnel syndrome, patient focussed health care delivery systems such as virtual clinics and mistake proofing in healthcare.
