Academic Background

Greg Jones is a consultant upper gastrointestinal, bariatric and general surgeon with extensive experience in laparoscopic and robotic minimally invasive surgery. He is the Clinical Lead for General Surgery at the Royal Berkshire Foundation NHS Trust (RBH).

Greg works privately with his colleagues Marianne Sampson and James Ramus as part of Thames Valley General Surgery.  Their team allows for 24/7 cover for private patients throughout the year. They work collaboratively, reviewing their outcomes and combining for more complex cases, whether that is the need for a second opinion, joint operating, or out of hours care.

Greg graduated from Imperial College in London in 2003. He undertook surgical training at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ hospitals in London. Specialist surgical training in Oxford and in 2012 I became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS). He then had further sub-specialty training in minimally invasive surgery in Reading and Oxford, and in 2014 completed my Higher Surgical training (CCT- GMC specialist register) with sub-specialty interest in Upper GI surgery. After this, he completed the sought after Upper GI and Bariatric surgery fellowship at Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne, where he was appointed as their first international fellow and developed expertise in all forms of complex minimally invasive gallbladder, hernia, anti-reflux surgery, and weight loss surgery.

Greg has been a consultant surgeon since 2015 with the remit to develop the bariatric unit into a level 1 tertiary referral centre and bring expertise in minimally invasive gallbladder and hernia surgery. In 2017, he set up the Robotic Surgery programme for Upper GI surgery and in 2023 has introduced endoscopic surgery into the Royal Berkshire Hospital. He regularly performs primary and complex revision surgery for hernias, weight loss, acid reflux and gallstones. This is performed both laparoscopically and using the ‘Da Vinci’ Xi Robotic platform. He audits his work, and submits his outcome data to local and national registries.
