Academic Background

Mr Charnley qualified in 1983 from St Thomas’ Hospital in London. He subsequently received training as a Registrar in London and as a Senior Registrar in Bristol. In 2007, he achieved the status of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Complimenting his UK training, he had Fellowship training in knee surgery in Basel, Switzerland in 1992, trauma and revision joint replacement surgery in Paris, France and a scholarship in pelvic fracture surgery in Seattle, USA, both in 1995.

His qualifications are: MBBS  FRCS  FRCS Ed. FRCS Orth. FHEA.

Prior to relocating to Essex he was both an honorary Senior Lecturer and a Consultant at Derriford Hospital and The Plymouth Post Graduate Medical School between 1995 and 2002.

For several decades Mr Charnley has been involved in surgical education. He has trained young surgeons in the techniques of both cemented and cementless hip replacement surgery, having introduced modern hip prosthesis designs to Mid-Essex since his arrival at Broomfield Hospital.

In addition to this, he has also lectured the region’s osteopaths, chiropractors, physiotherapists and rheumatologists about advances in joint replacement surgery.

For over 25-years he has presented original clinical research in the United Kingdom, but also elsewhere, including Sweden, Italy, Eire, Portugal, Austria and France.  

Mr Charnley has given three lectures in French, two in Paris and one in Toulouse. In 2005 he was awarded a prize for the best presentation in Toulouse and in Paris he has lectured on hip replacement after hip fracture and the use of short stems in hip replacement surgery in the United Kingdom.

In 2007 he gave instructional lectures in Johannesburg to the South African Orthopaedic Association on the use of trabecular metal acetabular components in primary and revision hip surgery.

Mr Charnley has previously been on the Orthopaedic Committee of the Royal Society of Medicine, a Regional Clinical Coordinator for the National Joint Registry and for 11-years he was an examiner for the FRCS Orthopaedic Diploma for the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

In 2023 Mr Charnley lectured the National Chiropractic Association about hip replacement surgery, particularly following Covid and with current NHS waiting list difficulties.

Away from the operating table, Mr Charnley loves sport, including horse riding, cricket, lawn tennis and real tennis. He enjoys travel and pre-Raphaelite art.
