Degenerative Conditions (Wear and Tear)

  • Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD): Chronic wear of the intervertebral discs that lose their cushioning ability over time.
  • Herniated / Prolapsed Discs: Often referred to as "slipped discs," occurring in the cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back), or lumbar (lower back) regions.
  • Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal or intervertebral foramen, most often due to aging, which "pinches" the spinal cord or nerve roots.
  • Spondylosis: A general term for degenerative changes including bone spurs (osteophytes) and arthritis that can press on nerves.

Nerve-Related Pain & Radiculopathy

  • Sciatica: Radiating pain from the lower back down the leg, often caused by a herniated lumbar disc.
  • Brachialgia: Radiating pain from the neck down the arm, typically due to a pinched nerve in the cervical spine.
  • Myelopathy: Spinal cord compression that can lead to loss of hand dexterity, balance issues, or weakness in the limbs.

Spinal Deformity & Instability

These conditions often require specialized surgical intervention to restore alignment and stability.

  • Scoliosis: Abnormal sideways curvature of the spine, which can be idiopathic (adolescent) or degenerative (adult).
  • Kyphosis: Excessive outward rounding of the upper back, such as Scheuermann's disease or age-related "hunching".
  • Spondylolisthesis: Forward slippage of one vertebra over another, leading to instability and potential nerve compression.

Trauma & Bone Health

  • Vertebral Compression Fractures: Often associated with Osteoporosis, these can cause sudden and severe back pain.
  • Spinal Trauma: Injuries resulting from accidents or falls, including burst or chance fractures.

Complex & Specialized Conditions

  • Spinal Tumours: Primary or metastatic (secondary) tumours involving the vertebrae or spinal cord.
  • Infectious Conditions: Such as discitis or epidural abscesses.
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS): An inflammatory type of arthritis that can eventually cause the vertebrae to fuse.
  • Cauda Equina Syndrome: A surgical emergency involving severe compression of the lower spinal nerves; identifying this "red flag" is critical for patient

Mr Davidson believes that the first step to recovery is understanding. He has a genuine passion for helping his patients clearly grasp the "why" behind their back problem, empowering them to make informed decisions about their care. Whether your goal is returning to the golf course, playing a competitive game of tennis, enjoying a quiet stroll on the beach, or simply curling up with a book in comfort, Mr Davidson is dedicated to helping you get there.
