He graduated from the University of Exeter in 2008 and completed Core Surgical Training in Bristol, during which he gained an MSc in Surgical Sciences from the University of Edinburgh. Mr Chana subsequently completed Higher Surgical Training in Oxford and completed his Doctoral Thesis at Imperial College London, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2019.

Prem then undertook extensive tripartite sub-specialist fellowship training in complex UGI surgery at world-leading institutions: 

• Senior Oesophagogastric/Bariatric Fellow at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne working with Professor Wendy Brown

• RCS Senior Clinical Fellow in Oesophagogastric Cancer Surgery at St Thomas’ Hospital, London working with Professors James Gossage and Andrew Davies 

• AUGIS Travelling Fellow to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York working with Professor Daniela Molena. 

Prem's training experience enhances his approach to treating a range of UGI conditions, ensuring that patients receive cutting edge, evidence based, individualised care. Prior to joining the team in Gloucestershire, he worked as a Consultant in a University Teaching Hospital for three years. 

Alongside clinical commitments, Prem has a strong academic and leadership portfolio. He continues to contribute to surgical outcome-based research and is supervising his second PhD student. He has recently been appointed as Specialty Director for Theatres in his NHS role.
