Mr Matthew Tutton is a Consultant General Surgeon specialising in colorectal, gall bladder, hernia surgery, gastroscopy and colonoscopy at Oaks Hospital, Colchester, Essex
Mr Tutton’s clinical interests are laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery. He is a specialist in colorectal surgery. His practice includes laparoscopic surgery for all types of hernia repairs, gallstones and bowel resections as well as open surgery and haemorrhoid treatments including stapled haemorrhoidectomy.
He performs gastroscopy and colonoscopy including EMR of large colonic polyps. Mr Tutton has an interest in SILS (single incision laparoscopic surgery) which minimises scarring from surgery. He is also interested in enhanced recovery programs which speeds recovery after surgery.

Mr Tutton’s medical training was at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, where he also undertook a Bachelor of Science Degree in neurosciences. Research for his thesis in colorectal cancer and Master of Surgery Degree was based at the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospitals. He has presented many national and international papers related to this research. He has also published papers, book chapters and presented internationally on topics including laparoscopic hernia repair, training in laparoscopic gallstone surgery, and laparoscopic bowel surgery.
He has given many invited lectures, including lectures to the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons in Athens and Stockholm as well as performing live surgery demonstrations to international meetings. As a consultant surgeon he has undertaken travelling fellowships to both the USA and to Japan to develop minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Mr Tutton currently holds honorary senior lecturer contracts with St Mary's University of London and also the Anglian Ruskin University, with whom he is a tutor for an MSc Degree course for minimally invasive and robotic surgery.
Mr Tutton is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal Society of Medicine. He is also a member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons, the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons and the European Society of Coloproctology.
