Academic background

Dr Thambapillai completed his post graduate training in Paediatrics in the teaching hospitals in London including the North Middlesex Hospital, University College Hospital and Kings College Hospital. He spent two years in Australia working as Neonatal Research fellow at the Royal Womens Hospital Melbourne Victoria and was appointed Senior Registrar in Paediatrics to the Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead and Old Church & Rush Green Hospital, Romford.

Dr Thambapillai was appointed Consultant Paediatrician and Lead Neonatologist to the PrincessAlexandra Hospital in 1992 and worked as Lead Doctor in Paediatrics from April 2003 to April 2009, leading a team of nine Consultants, one staff grade, eight middle grade doctors, 12 senior house officers and two foundation year one doctors. He played a major role in upgrading a special care baby unit into a level 2 sub regional neonatal intensive care unit.
