Academic Background
Mr MacDowell qualified as a doctor in 1993, having undertaken pre-clinical studies at Downing College, Cambridge followed by clinical studies at the University Of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine. While at Cambridge, he obtained a first class BA honours degree in molecular medicine. He then did house jobs in Cambridge and Ipswich obtaining full GMC registration in 2004. He then did anatomy demonstrating at Charing Cross Medical School before commencing on a basic surgical training rotation at Addenbrooke's Hospital Cambridge. While there he successfully obtained the FRCS (England) examination.In 1998, Mr MacDowell started specialist registrar training on the East Anglia training programme, with jobs rotating through different hospitals around the region. In 2001, he passed the FRCS (Tr & Orth) examination. In 2003 he spent 1 year at the highly prestigious Royal Adelaide Hospital, in South Australia, undertaking a specialist revision hip and knee fellowship under the guidance of the renowned Professor of Orthopaedics, Don Howie. As part of the year in Australia he also worked as a Lecturer at the University of South Australia, Adelaide. In 2004 Mr MacDowell was awarded his ‘Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training' in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery and was granted Specialist Recognition by the GMC.
