Clinical interests

Early inflammatory arthritis: there is insurmountable evidence that early aggressive treatment of inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis) offers a greater chance of remission and also drug-free remission. Having worked at the Early Arthritis Clinic in Cambridge, this has always been an area of interest and Dr Malaviya is well versed with the latest research in this field.

Inflammatory back pain: A small but significant proportion of people with chronic back pain have inflammation in their spine. There are newer therapies for this form of back pain (also called axial spondyloarthritis). Dr Malaviya is currently involved in clinical trials in this area.

He is also interested in vasculitis and has strong links with specialist teams in Cambridge with whom he co-manages many such complex patients.

Academic background

Having completed his basic medical degree (MBBS) in 2000, and an MD in 2004, Dr Malaviya went on to train in General Medicine working in several hospitals in East Anglia. After attaining MRCP in 2006, he pursued his specialist interest in rheumatology and worked as a clinical research fellow at the Rheumatology Research Unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and subsequently enrolled in the five year specialty training programme in 2007.

Dr Malaviya trained in both rheumatology and internal medicine, working at Southend Hospital, Broomfield and Addenbrooke’s. He completed the rheumatology exit exam in 2008 and achieved an MRCP (Rheum) in 2008. Over the course of his training he has presented several papers at international conferences and published several papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has been an NHS Consultant since 2012 working at the Mid Essex Hospital Trust.

Having run clinical trials in Cambridge for two years during his training, Dr Malaviya has set up rheumatology research locally in Chelmsford and continues to be involved in rheumatology research.

Having worked as a Consultant Rheumatologist at Broomfield Hospital for five years, in 2017 he moved his NHS practice to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge to pursue his interests in Early Arthritis and biologic drug research.

Dr Malaviya has several papers published on newer therapies in rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and other inflammatory diseases.
