Having qualified from University College Hospital, London, Dr Widdowson has since worked with various athletes ranging from elite Olympic athletes and professional sports teams to the recreational sports person, treating a range of sporting injuries. He was awarded an MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine from the University of Bath and was awarded a fellowship of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine 2013. He was the team doctor to the England Rugby U16's and England Saxons for 10 years, and joined the medical team at Bath Rugby in 2003. Dr Widdowson was their Head of Sports Medicine until 2012 and subsequently consultant in sports medicine to Bath Rugby. He was a medical team leader at the athletics track, London Olympics 2012. He is now team doctor to the Welsh Rugby Union.
He is a Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine in Bath and is Clinical Lead for the Orthopaedic Interface NHS Service. He is also Clinical Lead for the South West Hub of the National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science, one of three hubs providing Sport Medicine expertise to all genres of dancers across England. He is the medical director of Cyclissimo Ltd, an organisation dedicated to improving cyclists performance.
Other sports medicine posts include member of the medical team for the Paralympics World Cup 2009 and team doctor to Wales Rugby League until 2009. He is the Clinical Director of the renowned MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine course at the University of Bath. He is an Assessor for the General Medical Council for the specialty of Sport and Exercise Medicine and is an examiner for the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.
Dr Widdowson is very excited to become part of the team at Winfield Hospital in. He is a highly experienced consultant who likes to take the time with his patients to ensure the highest quality of care. He also believes in involving other specialists where appropriate to ensure the patient is able to return to the sports they love confidently.
With his busy professional career Dr Widdowson is glad to have such a supportive family. Married to his wife, Celia, he has four beautiful children. Away from work Dr Widdowson is a keen sportsman and enjoys cricket, golf, skiing and playing tennis with his family.
