Professor Ernest Schilders is an internationally recognized orthopaedic surgeon.

Shoulder

Professor Schilders started his practice in Bradford in 1999, where GPs created the slogan « Schilders for shoulders ».

Professor Schilders pioneered complex arthroscopic shoulder surgery in WestYorkshire and ran a shoulder fellowship at Bradford Teaching Hospitals, which has trained several very well known shoulder surgeons.

Hip

Professor Schilders developed hip arthroscopy in Yorkshire and is an expert in hip joint preservation. He has performed over 2000 hip arthroscopies. He is the only surgeon in the region who provides full joint preservation. Techniques used are;stem cell resurfacing for cartilage defects, as well as labral grafting for patients who do not have a labrum.

Professor Schilders published the first comparative study in the country to investigate different techniques to treat labral tears.

For the follow-up of his patients he uses a unique digital outcome scoring system,which he has now used for 10 years.

Groin in sports

Professor Schilders is the country’s leading expert for adductor problems in athletes. He developed new surgical techniques that allow high level athletes to return to sports for a condition that often was career ending in the past. Some professional athletes return to sports as early as at 2,5 weeks post operatively.

Recently, Professor Schilders was one of 24 experts from 16 countries participating in a consensus meeting onterminology of hip and groin pain.

Steven Gerrard, the former England captain who has been operated in the Yorkshire clinic, referred to him in his autobiography My Story as “a fine surgeon, from Belgium”, whom Liverpool FC “had relied on for years” as their “hip and groin specialist”. Professor Schilders divides his time between London and Yorkshire. In London he works in the Fortius Clinic, a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence, and the Wellington Hospital. In Yorkshire he works in the Yorkshire Clinic. In 2015 he was appointed a full Professor of Orthopaedic Sports medicine at Leeds Beckett University.

Professor Schilders has treated players from the majority of Premiership football teams but also players from other European countries and teams such as Barcelona FC, Real Sociedad, Juventus, Lazio, Zenit FC, CCSK Moscou, Steaua Bucharest, Anderlecht and Club Brugge amongst many others.  Recently, he was in the Swiss national press after treating successfully the goalie of the Swiss national ice hockey team.

He has gained international recognition with his research on hip and groin injuries in athletes and is currently the chief researcher for a global FIFA study on acute groin injuries in football. 

Professor Schilders has a unique profile in that he combines expertise in medical conditions of the soft tissues around the hip and groin with extensive hip arthroscopy experience.  Professor Ernest Schilders is the country’s leading expert on adductor problems in athletes and has spent more than 15 years researching on this subject.  He has treated players from the majority of Premiership and Championship teams.  The research he conducts is mainly focused on femoroacetabular impingement, the athletic hip and adductor problems in athletes.

Professor Schilders’ research team is running a screening program on the prevention of hip and groin problems in athletes.  Professor Schilders is also one of the leading consultants to be part of The Yorkshire Clinic Sports Medicine Department.

More clinical interests consist of minimally invasive hip surgery, which Professor Schilders has a unique profile of combining expertise in hamstring problems, adductor related groin pain and hip arthroscopy.

Academic background

Professor Schilders is a reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, the British and American Journal of Sports medicine, Sports medicine and the Journal of Anatomy.

In 2008, Ernest Schilders was appointed Visiting Professor in Sports Medicine at Leeds Metropolitan University. He lectures on several sports medicine courses and is also one of the founding members of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine UK.

Professor Schilders has had training as an Orthopaedic Consultant in Belgium and the United States.
