Remote Sleep Studies

At Ramsay Health Care, people often come to us for sleep studies to try to find out the cause of their ongoing sleep problems, or if they are feeling sleepy during the day or waking up feeling tired instead of refreshed. Also, partners may hear loud snoring, gasping and stopping breathing while sleeping which causes concern. Patients might also be referred for a sleep study if they are identified as high risk for sleep apnoea before undergoing surgery with Ramsay Health Care.

What are sleep studies?

Sleep studies are painless non-invasive tests that monitor your sleep and how your body responds to sleep problems. They are used to help doctors diagnose and manage many sleep disorders. These tests can be performed at home or in a sleep centre or hospital. All Ramsay sleep studies with Theta Sleep are delivered in patients’ homes to maximise convenience.

There are many different types of sleep study available. They work in different ways to record various physiological parameters to monitor brain and body function whilst you are asleep. They can measure brain waves, oxygen levels in the blood, heart rate, breathing, eye and limb movements, and any noise made such as snoring, to diagnose sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea and restless legs syndrome.

Types of sleep study used to look for sleep apnoea include:

  • Respiratory polygraphy – a home sleep study that uses multiple sensors to record breathing, oxygen levels, snoring, body position, and heart rate during sleep. Additional sensors can also be used to look for leg movement during sleep.
  • Novel home-testing devices for sleep apnoea – newer, simplified home tests designed to look for obstructive sleep apnoea. They use fewer sensors than respiratory polygraphy and are slightly easier to set up. They aren’t suitable for all patients.
  • Polysomnography – this very detailed type of sleep study is usually carried out overnight in a sleep laboratory. It records brain waves, breathing, heart activity, oxygen levels, body movements, and sleep stages. It is not usually necessary to diagnose sleep apnoea and is usually used to look for other sleep disorders.
