Clinical interests

All aspects of gastroenterology particularly irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal pain, bloating, heartburn/reflux, diarrhoea, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and constipation as well as digestive symptoms that arise as a consequence of diabetes and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.  

Academic background

Dr Adam Farmer was educated at Stonyhurst College, University College London, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. Dr Farmer’s research focuses on irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, food intolerances, nausea/vomiting and chronic abdominal pain. He has been involved in a number of international clinical trials and is regularly asked to contribute to the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

He has has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, has contributed to 13 books and is Editor in Chief of the textbook Medicine : Gastroenterology. His work has been published in leading medical journals such as Gastroenterology, Gut and the Lancet and has been cited by other researchers in the field over 1,500 times. Furthermore, his research has pioneered the link between abdominal symptoms and other disorders such as diabetes and Ehlers- Danlos Syndrome, which has led to direct improvement in patient care.

Dr Farmer is the UK representative on the European society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility Executive Committee and is the incoming Chair of the Neurogastroenterology and Motility Section of the British Society of Gastroenterology. 

His contribution to research has been internationally recognised by the American Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility andwas named the 2018 United European Gastroenterology Federation Rising Star.
