A breast MRI is a non-invasive scan with no radiation. It takes approximately 1 hour and is likely to include contrast.
Breast MRI is not used routinely for breast screening, but it can detect breast tumours that are too small to detect through other routes such as a physical exam and mammograms.
A breast MRI does not take the place of a mammogram but can be performed alongside it as an extra study. Due to the lack of radiation, it is a safe to have both.
MRI breast scanning is an excellent option for those worried about breast implant integrity.
For diagnosis: To investigate abnormalities detected by a mammogram or ultrasound, and to help characterize lumps or tumours.
For screening: To screen for breast cancer in women who are at a high risk due to factors like family history. Although we do mammograms the benefit of an MRI is there is no radiation and so is particularly good for younger women.
For cancer assessment: To determine the extent of a diagnosed cancer, including whether it has spread beyond the breast, which helps with treatment planning.
For treatment monitoring: To monitor the effectiveness of chemotherapy by measuring the size of tumours over time.
For implants: To check the integrity of breast implants.
