Breast enlargement surgery is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures. There are many reasons why women opt for breast enlargement surgery. For example, they wish to regain fullness after weight loss or following a pregnancy, to correct asymmetry or to recreate the breast after a mastectomy for cancer treatment.
Before you decide that breast implants are right for you, here is a short guide on what you can expect on a breast enlargement journey.
Initial assessment for breast implants
Your surgeon will offer an initial consultation and assessment to determine if breast enlargement is right for you. During this assessment you will have an opportunity to ask questions and to tell the surgeon what you want to obtain from having breast implants. Your surgeon will explain the procedure and outline any potential risks.
Getting ready for breast enlargement surgery
You surgeon will advise you how to prepare for your breast enlargement, in the weeks leading up to the surgery. You may be asked to lose some weight, stop smoking, change medications or your diet. By following these instructions, you will be giving yourself the best chance to recover quickly and to heal well.
During breast enlargement surgery
Breast enlargement surgery usually requires a general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will make incisions in the skin of your breasts and insert the breast implants, usually on top of the muscle of your chest wall. The incisions will be closed with stitches. The whole procedure can take up to two hours.
Immediately after breast enlargement surgery
When you come around after the operation, you will likely have drainage tubes inserted in the wounds, to allow easy removal of excess fluid and blood. If you are in pain, ask for pain relief. You may be required to stay in hospital for a day or two, to ensure that you are beginning to recover properly.
The days after breast enlargement surgery
Before you are discharged home, you will be given advice how to look after your breasts and how to watch out for any potential complications such as infection or poor wound healing. You will need to wear a special supportive bra for a few weeks post-surgery. Of course, if you have any problems at home, you can get in touch with your surgical team for help and advice. You will also have outpatient appointments as part of your follow-up. Full recovery can take several months, but you should be able to return to most of your usual activities within six weeks.
Long term after breast enlargement surgery
Your scars will fade over time and can usually be hidden beneath underwear and swimwear tops. Breast implants usually have a shelf-life of around 10 years and typically will need to be replaced around this time. While breast implants do not affect your risk of developing breast cancer, they can interfere with screening and diagnostic mammograms, so be sure to inform the radiographer that you have implants.
