LINX® Reflux Management System

The LINX® system is a small ring of magnetic beads that is placed around your lower oesophagus to help prevent acid reflux while allowing normal swallowing.

What is the Linx® system?

The LINX® system is a minimally invasive treatment for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. It is designed for patients whose reflux symptoms continue despite lifestyle changes or medication. The procedure uses a small, flexible ring of magnetic beads to strengthen your lower oesophageal sphincter, helping prevent acid and bile from flowing back into your oesophagus.

It offers an alternative to long-term medication and traditional anti-reflux surgery, with the aim of restoring natural function rather than altering your anatomy.

What is GORD?

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) happens when the muscle at the bottom of your oesophagus becomes weak and allows your stomach contents to move upward. This can cause:

  • Persistent heartburn

  • Regurgitation or an unpleasant taste

  • Chest discomfort

  • Chronic cough or throat irritation

For many people, medication helps control symptoms. For others, symptoms continue to affect daily life, sleep and wellbeing. The LINX® procedure may be considered for patients who meet clinical criteria and want a long-term solution.

How does the LINX® system work?

The LINX® device is a small ring made of titanium beads with magnetic cores. It is placed around the lower end of your oesophagus during a laparoscopic (keyhole) procedure.

It works using the magnetic attraction between the beads to help keep your lower oesophageal sphincter closed. When you swallow, the beads separate to allow food and liquid to pass through. After swallowing, the beads come back together to prevent reflux.

The goal is to reinforce your body’s natural barrier without changing your stomach’s anatomy.

What are the benefits of the LINX® procedure?

Many patients choose the LINX® system because it offers a gentle, effective way to manage reflux while preserving natural function. People often benefit from:

  • A noticeable reduction or complete resolution of reflux symptoms

  • A significant and lasting decrease in acid in the oesophagus

  • Improved day‑to‑day comfort and overall quality of life

  • Less reliance on long‑term acid‑suppressing medication, with most patients able to stop medication altogether

  • A minimally invasive procedure with only small incisions

  • A device designed to allow normal swallowing, belching, and vomiting

  • A quicker recovery and fewer side effects compared with traditional anti‑reflux surgery

  • A low complication rate

Who is suitable for LINX®?

The LINX® procedure may be considered if you:

  • Have reflux confirmed through diagnostic testing

  • Have ongoing GORD symptoms despite medication

  • Prefer a long-term solution rather than lifelong medication

  • Are suitable for laparoscopic surgery

Your suitability will always be assessed by a specialist consultant following a full clinical evaluation.

What does the LINX® procedure involve?

The LINX® procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic using keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery and usually takes less than an hour. Your surgeon will make four or five small incisions in your abdomen to insert a camera and fine surgical instruments.

A small amount of tissue around your lower oesophageal sphincter is gently released to create a tunnel where the LINX® device will sit. Your surgeon then measures the area, selects the correctly sized LINX® ring and places it around the bottom of your oesophagus before locking it into position. Once the device is in place, the instruments are removed and the small incisions are closed.

What are the potential complications of a LINX® system?

Like any surgical procedure, the LINX® system carries potential risks. Most people recover well, but complications can include:

  • Temporary mild difficulty swallowing as the device settles

  • Discomfort or pain around the surgical area

  • Nausea or bloating in the early recovery period

  • The device moving out of position, which may require further treatment

  • Rare cases of erosion into the oesophagus

  • Infection around the device

  • A need for the device to be removed if symptoms do not improve or if complications occur

Unlike some other surgical treatments for reflux, the LINX® system is designed to preserve normal belching and vomiting, which helps reduce certain side effects seen with more traditional procedures.

Your consultant will discuss the risks with you as part of your assessment so you can make an informed decision based on clear information.

What is the recovery process after a LINX® procedure?

Recovery is usually quick, and the LINX® system starts working straight away. Most people can eat soft foods within a few hours and return to a normal diet the next day. You may go home the same day, or your surgeon may advise an overnight stay.

At home, you’ll be encouraged to eat small, frequent meals and stay on a soft diet at first, returning to normal foods as soon as you feel able. It’s common to have some temporary difficulty swallowing after the first week, which usually improves over 6 to 8 weeks, with full recovery expected by 12 to 16 weeks.

You can usually resume light activities within a couple of days and return to work after 1 to 2 weeks, depending on how you feel. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for around 4 weeks. You can drive once you feel fully in control of your vehicle and your insurance company confirms you’re covered.

You’ll receive guidance on pain relief before going home, and you’ll have a follow-up appointment with your surgeon about six weeks after your procedure.

The cost of a LINX® procedure will depend on the hospital or clinic you choose for your care.
