Mr Makhija underwent Basic Surgical Training in Plymouth, Devon where he also did a research fellowship. He underwent Higher Surgical Training in the East of England Deanery and gained the intercollegiate FRCS (Gen Surg) in 2008. He then went to University Hospitals, Case Medical Centre, Cleveland, Ohio, USA for a 1 year clinical Fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and colorectal surgery.

Mr Makhija is on the GMC specialist register and is a substantative Consultant Surgeon in the NHS specialising in general, laparoscopic and colorectal surgery. While in the USA, he gained experience in advanced laparoscopic techniques including single-port laparoscopic surgery. He has numerous publications and book chapters and maintains an interest in academic surgery.
