Inguinal hernia repair is open surgery to return an inguinal hernia back to its origins and, to repair and strengthen a weakened abdominal wall often using a mesh.
An inguinal hernia happens when fatty tissue or a part of your bowel pokes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle wall and allows a bulge to form in your groin at the top of your inner thigh. This hernia pushes into an area called the inguinal canal.

An inguinal hernia repair is an operation to put a hernia lump back into its correct place and, to strengthen your abdominal wall and prevent the hernia from reoccurring.
It is normally performed if you have hernia pain or if serious complications occur such as obstruction (a bowel section gets stuck in the inguinal canal) or strangulation (a bowel section becomes trapped so that its blood supply is cut off). Strangulation requires emergency inguinal hernia repair surgery to restore the blood supply to your bowel.

Open inguinal hernia repair may be performed under local anaesthetic as opposed laparoscopic surgery which is normally performed under to general anaesthetic.

Inguinal hernia repair surgery carries very few risks. Complications that may occur include: the hernia returning, a build-up of fluid or blood in the space where the hernia was, groin pain and, nerve damage. In men there is a rick of: testicle blood supply damage, vas deferens tube damage and, pain, swelling and bruising of the testicles or at the base of the penis.
