Gastric Balloon

After your Gastric Balloon – Patient Guide

Gastric Balloon

Diet and nutritional expectations

After your gastric balloon has been inserted you will start on a fluid diet for the first three days. You will then move onto soft foods until day ten when you can eat normal textured foods again. A strict diet will allow your body to adjust to the balloon, prevent dehydration and keep your energy levels up.

Top tips after Gastric Sleeve surgery

Some foods have a tendency to stick to the balloon and can cause very unpleasant ‘burps’. You may find pasta and soft bread a particular problem. Slowly sip a glass of water about 30 to 45 minutes after meals as tolerated. This will rinse the balloon and help prevent the unpleasant burps caused by food sticking to the balloon.

Medical concerns

A gastric balloon procedure rarely causes any major problems. There are normal symptoms that you may experience following the procedure.

Review, follow up and support

As the gastric balloon procedure is different to other weight loss surgeries, the recovery period is much less.

Once you’ve had a gastric balloon fitted your aftercare and actions are important and will influence how fast you recover and how much weight you lose. You should ensure that you are ready and willing to change your lifestyle and that you have as much motivation as possible. You must be able to commit to a long term weight management plan in order to succeed.
