UK Cancer Patients to Receive Better Access to Quality Care – Experienced Partners to Deliver

Ramsay Health Care UK (Ramsay) and GenesisCare, Australia’s largest provider of radiotherapy services (GenesisCare), are pleased to announce a long term partnership for the provision of high quality integrated cancer services in the United Kingdom.

Cancer patients in Essex and Hertfordshire will be the first to benefit from the improved access to care, new treatment techniques and co-ordination of care to support their needs.  In these regions, Ramsay’s Rivers Hospital in Sawbridgeworth and Ramsay’s Springfield Hospital in Chelmsford will be the first locations to build new comprehensive cancer centres.  Both sites are expected to open new cancer services during 2015. Ramsay and GenesisCare are currently evaluating other regions in the UK that would also benefit from increased access to high quality cancer services and are expecting to announce further locations in the next 12 months.

Ramsay’s existing chemotherapy services will be relocated into new facilities along with GenesisCare’s radiotherapy services, the latest diagnostic tools, imaging technology and combined with surgical oncology capabilities.  Both hospitals are also expanding capacity through major capital investment, to ensure ongoing 24 hour access for patients requiring admitted care. A complete ‘Survivorship Program’ will be offered to support patients in their journey. This will include counselling, nutritional support, speech pathology and exercise programs all in the one location.  These services will be integrated with one electronic medical record and one contact point for patients and will extend to out of hospital support where needed.  Both organisations are committed to achieve the best possible clinical outcomes for patients and to remain at the forefront of cancer care, through links to education and research projects.

Both hospitals have over 20 years’ experience of delivering cancer services, and bringing the GenesisCare experience in the provision of radiotherapy now allows a fully integrated model of care.   In a first for the region, patients will no longer need to travel up to an hour for essential radiotherapy services, spending time away from their families or work to receive treatment on a daily basis for up to 6 weeks.

Managing Director of GenesisCare, Mr Dan Collins, said “Cancer patients need faster access to better quality care. We will make the patient journey easier and improve patient outcomes too. Ramsay and GenesisCare can combine our deep healthcare experience to make this happen right across the UK.  From a radiotherapy perspective, it is pleasing to be able to offer the world’s best practice technology and the latest treatment techniques to a community in need.”

Beyond comprehensive cancer services, Ramsay and GenesisCare will jointly develop outcomes databases, research programs and training and development of staff and education for patients, medical professionals and community groups.  The outcomes database will collect statistical data to measure and track outcomes for patients across treatment modalities and across the continuum of care.

Ramsay UK’s CEO, Mark Page said “Providing better and comprehensive patient care closer to home along with actively supporting and developing a cancer outcomes database is a great initiative, and at the core of Ramsay’s philosophy of people caring for people.  I couldn’t be more pleased to be introducing these cutting edge services to the communities of Essex and Hertfordshire in conjunction with our partners GenesisCare.”

Radiotherapy is a highly cost effective and clinically effective treatment. It accounts for just 5% of the national spend on cancer treatment in the UK and yet is the second most effective treatment for cancer (next to surgery). Of all patients cured of their cancer, 40% will have received radiotherapy as part of their curative treatment and 16% of all cures can be attributed entirely to their radiotherapy.
